I can’t vote in Canada—I’ve given up my residency.
I can’t vote in the United States—I’m a non-resident alien.
I remain a proud Canadian.
I have become a proud American.
I am a disenfranchised patriot.
I migrated to the United States to study as an undergraduate in 1999. In 2005 I moved to New York City to begin a PhD in Political Science in American politics at Columbia University.
At Columbia, I tell my students, “In Canada, our Conservative Party would generally be left of the Democrats. And if I could, I would vote Liberal.” In my home I have framed Shepard Fairey’s iconic campaign poster of President Obama and still have HOPE in him and his presidency.
My academic research and this blog will, no doubt, reflect this political sensibility. To suggest otherwise would be disingenuous. However, although I maintain an unwavering ideological belief in the necessity of government I remain critical of its governance.
This blog will emphasize American health care policy and politics. It will be a mixture of long and short posts; of original research and political commentary. It will become, I hope, an addendum to PhD dissertation; a depository for my maturing thoughts and research.
Most importantly it will provide much needed motivation to write and articulate my developing ideas.
